The ingredients needed to make Kodo Millet Pongal:
  1. Prepare 1 cup kodo millet, washed and soaked for 15 mins
  2. Prepare 1/2 cup moong dal, washed and soaked for 15 mins
  3. Get 4 cups water
  4. Get 1 tbsp ginger, grated
  5. Prepare 2 tsp black peppercorns
  6. Get 2 green chillies
  7. Make ready 1 tbsp ghee
  8. Take 1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  9. Take 1/4 cup raw cashews
  10. Get leaves few curry
  11. Get to taste salt

Note - You can substitute kodo millet with little millet (samai) or. Millet pongal recipe - sharing another millet recipe that is filling, healthy and protein rich. You can use any other millet like kodo millet (varagu), little millet (sama) or barnyard millet to make this. Very recently i started making upma & pongal varieties using millets.

Instructions to make Kodo Millet Pongal:
  1. Wash and soak the millet and moong dal for 15 mins.
  2. In a pressure cooker,add the soaked millet,dal,ginger,green chillies,peppercorns and salt with 4 cups of water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles and allow to naturally release the pressure
  3. Once the millet and dal are cooked, they should have a slightly runny, creamy consistency. Stir with a ladle, mashing the millet and dal a bit, and add a little more water if needed to get to this consistency. If you add more water, do it over medium heat so the rice warms through.
  4. Make the tempering by heating the ghee in a skillet. Add the cumin seeds, curry leaves and stir for a minute.Add the nuts and stir until lightly golden.
  5. Add the tempering to the cooked millet and lentils. Mix well.Serve hot with coconut chutney and sambhar.

I tried Ven pongal using Varagu arisi( Kodo millet in English,Koden/Kodra in Hindi,Harka in Kannada,Arikelu in Telugu. Varagu Pongal Recipe or Varagarisi Ven Pongal is a very healthy and tasty for breakfast. I often make varagu pongal with coconut chutney and tiffin sambar and Varagu Arisi Pongal Recipe - Ingredients. I have used Varagu (Kodo millet) to make this Pongal. The recipe is very simple and you can opt this for a easy breakfast.
